A Space to Think Clearly

I am a consultant psychiatrist working at the intersection of mental health and decision-making. I work with people navigating complex, high-stakes situations where clarity often depends less on the problem itself and more on how it is being thought through.

I take on a limited number of private consultations and am selective in the work I undertake.

The initial conversation is not a rushed assessment or a checklist. It is a space to understand the situation you are facing, to examine how you have been thinking about it, and to see where clarity may begin to emerge. Depending on the context, this may involve clinical assessment where relevant, a discussion of options, or simply a more structured way of thinking through a decision.

There is no expectation to commit to long-term work. For some, a single conversation is sufficient; others may choose to continue over time.

Consultations or a space to think clearly when it matters can be arranged in person or remotely.

If you would like to explore whether a conversation would be helpful, you are welcome to get in touch.

Background

Dr Ashim is a consultant psychiatrist, medical leader, and educator with over twenty-five years of experience across clinical psychiatry, forensic systems, and mental health services. He is currently teaching at the University of Health Sciences in Blantyre, Malawi, while on sabbatical from his role as Divisional Lead for Mental Health at the Gibraltar Health Authority, where he led clinical services, strategy, and service delivery across the territory’s mental health system.

He has worked clinically across seven healthcare systems—India, the United Kingdom, Bermuda, the Republic of Ireland, Qatar, Jersey, and Gibraltar—gaining experience of differing approaches to clinical care, service organisation, governance, and mental health legislation. This international experience and understanding of various systems, cultures, and leadership styles influence his mental health practice.

Alongside his medical training, he completed a law degree (LLB Hons., Open University, UK), which has informed his medico-legal work. He has prepared over three hundred expert reports and given evidence in courts, tribunals, and coronial proceedings.

He examines for the Royal College of Psychiatrists and teaches medical students, general practitioners, and psychiatric trainees. His clinical work spans adult, liaison, forensic, addiction, intellectual disability, and child and adolescent psychiatry, with a particular interest in the relationship between mental health, leadership, and organisational wellbeing.

Outside medicine, he enjoys cooking, chess, and music, and has been learning the lever harp for the past three years. He also takes a thoughtful interest in nutrition and lifestyle medicine, influenced in part by his clinical work and by yoga philosophy and selected principles from traditional Indian approaches to health and wellbeing.
